What the Homeowner Wanted
This Westfield family had 1,754 square feet of unfinished basement and a long list of things they wanted it to be: somewhere to entertain, somewhere for the kids, a guest room, a place to work out, and real storage that stayed out of sight. The hard part was not the wish list. It was the wet bar. Putting a sink in a basement means getting a drain line below a concrete slab that was poured without one, and that single decision drives the whole plan.
How We Built It
We saw-cut and removed about fifteen linear feet of the existing slab to trench a new 2-inch drain line, ran it to a sewage ejector pump and basin set into the storage room, then repaired the concrete flush with the existing floor. The bar got its own dedicated 20-amp GFCI circuit, the ejector pump another, and a half-inch PEX cold water line with a quarter-turn shut-off. From there it was a full build: perimeter walls framed with a 1-inch air gap held off the foundation for moisture management, kiln-dried lumber with pressure-treated plates anywhere it met concrete, insulation, Level 4 drywall, and luxury vinyl plank throughout every finished area except the bathroom. The bar wall carries stacked gloss tile to the ceiling, quartz counters, white shaker cabinetry and stained floating shelves, with a full-height refrigerator and wall ovens built in. Opposite it, a black entertainment built-in spans nearly fifteen feet around a linear electric fireplace with lit display shelving. The bathroom pairs a fluted white oak double vanity and brass fixtures with a tiled shower. Under the stairs, the kids got a door of their own with a cedar awning and a window box.
The Finished Space
Seven distinct spaces in one lower level — bar and lounge, game area, guest bedroom, exercise room, full bath, and finished storage — finished over roughly ten to twelve weeks. The plumbing that made it possible is invisible, which is the point. What the family sees is a floor of their house that was not usable before and now is the one everybody ends up in.
